How to Become a Yoga Teacher in Sri Lanka: 200 Hour YTT Guide (2026–27)

Can you become a yoga teacher in Sri Lanka in 23 days? The short answer

Yes. A 200 hour yoga teacher training at a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School is the standard first qualification for teaching yoga, and you can complete it in Sri Lanka in 23 days. At Diksha Yoga School, the course runs at Green Serene Villa in Galle, from €2,000 including 22 nights’ accommodation, three sattvic vegetarian meals a day and airport pickup.

You train in a group of no more than 10 students and graduate with a 200-hour certificate that makes you eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as an RYT 200. This guide covers the real cost, a typical day, what you learn, how to choose a school and what you can do once you qualify.

What is an RYT 200, and how do you become one?

RYT 200 means Registered Yoga Teacher at the 200-hour level, the credential most studios, gyms and online platforms ask for. Yoga Alliance grants it to teachers who complete a 200-hour training at a Registered Yoga School (RYS 200).

Here is the path, step by step:

  1. Choose a Registered Yoga School. Check that the school holds RYS 200 status in the Yoga Alliance directory.
  2. Complete all 200 hours. Attend the full course, including the teaching practicum and final assessment.
  3. Receive your 200-hour certificate from the school.
  4. Register with Yoga Alliance online as an RYT 200. Yoga Alliance charges its own registration fee, paid directly to them.
  5. Start teaching. Many graduates begin with community classes, private sessions or online classes.
  6. Keep growing. Continue to a 300 hour yoga teacher training to reach RYT 500, or build teaching experience toward the E-RYT 200 designation.

Yoga Alliance registration is voluntary, and teaching rules vary by country and employer, but it is the most widely recognised yoga teaching credential in the world.

Why train in Sri Lanka, and why Galle?

Sri Lanka combines a living Buddhist and Hindu tradition with tropical nature and a slower pace of life, so it is easy to step away from daily distractions for three weeks. Galle, on the palm-lined south coast, adds calm beaches, the UNESCO-listed Galle Fort and an included transfer from Colombo airport.

Learn more about Why Galle is a great place for yoga teacher training

  • Focus without distraction: Green Serene Villa sits in tropical greenery, away from traffic and crowds, with a spacious yoga shala.
  • Small groups: a maximum of 10 students means your teachers know your name, your body and your teaching.
  • One fee, few surprises: training, room, meals, airport pickup and local excursions are all included.
  • Rest days done right: on Sundays you can explore Galle Fort, Unawatuna beach, the stilt fishermen at Koggala or a turtle hatchery.

How to Choose the Best Yoga Teacher Training in Sri Lanka

Who is the 200 hour yoga teacher training for?

You don’t need to be advanced, flexible or an experienced teacher. You need a sincere interest in yoga and three weeks to give it your full attention.

  • Aspiring yoga teachers ready to take the first real step toward teaching
  • Dedicated practitioners who want to understand the principles and tradition behind their practice
  • Existing teachers who want stronger foundations and a 200-hour certificate from a Yoga Alliance registered school
  • Beginners with a sincere interest, since the course builds your practice step by step.
  • Wellness and movement professionals adding yoga, breathwork and meditation to their work.
  • Anyone seeking personal growth who wants 23 days to reconnect body, breath and mind.

Only have 11 days? Our 100 hour yoga teacher training in Sri Lanka is a shorter first step, though it does not qualify you for RYT 200 on its own.

Student teaching a yoga class during the 200 hour practicum in Sri Lanka
  • Week 1: you learn to plan a class, cue clearly and demonstrate, and practise short sequences with a partner.
  • Week 2: you build your own sequences and lead parts of the evening class, with feedback on cueing, pacing and demonstration.
  • Week 3: you teach complete classes, offer modifications for different students and refine your own teaching voice.

At the end of the course you complete a written assessment and a practical teaching assessment. Students who attend every session and complete the practicum receive their 200-hour certificate.
