How to Get to Koh Samui from Bangkok: Flight, Ferry, Train
Quick answer: the fastest way to get to Koh Samui from Bangkok is the direct Bangkok Airways flight: about 1 hour 10 minutes in the air, roughly ฿2,800–6,800 one way. The best-value way is to fly to Surat Thani on a low-cost airline and take a bus-and-ferry ticket to the island: about 5–7 hours and around half the price. Overnight sleeper trains and buses with a ferry are cheapest but take 11–17 hours. Students on our 100 and 200 hour courses get free pickup from Koh Samui Airport.
Koh Samui is an island, with no bridge to the mainland, so every route ends either with a flight into Samui’s own airport or a ferry across the Gulf of Thailand. This guide compares every option in 2026–27, with real prices, times and which pier you land at. That last detail matters, because some piers are a few minutes from our school on Bang Por Beach and others are on the far side of the island.

Prices are typical ranges for 2026 from operators’ price lists and booking sites. December–January and Songkran (mid-April) are the most expensive weeks.
Our recommendation for yoga students:
- Coming straight from an international flight? Fly direct to Koh Samui. You’ll arrive the same day, without extra transfers, and our pickup meets you at the airport.
- On a budget, with a free day before your course? Fly to Surat Thani and buy a bus-and-ferry ticket in the arrivals hall.
- Want an adventure and to save a night’s hotel? Take the overnight sleeper train.
Option 1: fly direct to Koh Samui (fastest)
Bangkok Airways owns Koh Samui Airport and is the only airline flying there nonstop from Bangkok. That’s why the fares are high for such a short flight.
| Details | |
| Flight time | About 1 hour 05–1 hour 15 |
| From Suvarnabhumi (BKK) | About 20 flights a day, roughly 06:00–20:00 |
| From Don Mueang (DMK) | 3 flights a day |
| One-way fare | About ฿2,800 in quiet months, ฿6,000–6,800 in peak weeks |
| Baggage | A checked bag is usually included |
Tips:
- Coming from abroad? Most international flights land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), which also has most of the Samui flights, so you can often connect without changing airports.
- Book 3–6 weeks ahead for the best fares. December, January and mid-April fill first.
- Koh Samui Airport (USM) is about 16 km from our school on Bang Por Beach, around 30 minutes by road. Pickup from USM is included with both our 100 Hour and 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand.
- On a booked-through international ticket, a delay on your first flight is usually the airline’s problem. On separate tickets, leave at least 3 hours between flights.

Option 2: fly to Surat Thani, then bus and ferry (best value)
This is the classic money-saving route, often about half the price of the direct flight for around three extra hours.
- Fly Don Mueang (DMK) → Surat Thani (URT) with Thai AirAsia, Nok Air or Thai Lion Air. The flight takes about 1 hour 15, and fares are often ฿1,000–2,000 one way.
- Buy a combined bus-and-ferry ticket in the arrivals hall. One ticket covers the coach to Donsak pier and the ferry to Koh Samui.
- Cross to the island: about 1.5 hours on the car ferry, or 45 minutes on the catamaran.
| Combo ticket from Surat Thani airport | Price (approx.) | Lands at |
| Phantip coach + Seatran ferry | ฿330–520 | Nathon pier |
| Raja Ferry coach + car ferry | About ฿550 | Lipa Noi pier |
| Lomprayah coach + catamaran | ฿750–950 | Nathon pier |
| Boonsiri van + catamaran | About ฿850 (฿1,000 with hotel drop) | Nathon pier |
Watch the clock: the last combined tickets leave Surat Thani airport around 15:00–16:00. If your flight lands later, you’ll need to spend a night in Surat Thani. Allow 3–4 hours from the airport to the island.
Good news for our students: Nathon pier is only about 10 km from Health Oasis Resort on Bang Por Beach. Our airport pickup covers Koh Samui Airport, so if you come by ferry, message us and we’ll help you arrange the short last leg.
Option 3: overnight sleeper train + ferry (the adventure)
There’s no train to the island itself, but sleeper trains run from Bangkok to Surat Thani (Phun Phin station) every evening, and bus-and-ferry operators meet the trains in the morning.
- Where: trains leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat station in Bangkok, not the old Hua Lamphong station.
- Which train: Express No. 85 (departs about 19:50, arrives about 06:23) is the most convenient. It arrives just as the morning bus-and-ferry tickets start.
- Fares at the station (approx.): second-class air-con berth ฿700 (upper) to ฿900 (lower), first-class berth ฿1,300–1,500, third-class seat about ฿250. Online sellers add ฿100–200.
- Then: buy a bus-and-ferry ticket on the station forecourt, about ฿420–1,000 depending on the boat.
- Total: about 15–17 hours door to door, ฿950–2,000 depending on class.
Book early for December–February. Lower berths and first-class cabins sell out weeks ahead. Sales open up to 90 days before departure on most trains.
Our advice: the sleeper train is a wonderful experience, but not straight off a long-haul flight. It’s best if you’re already in Bangkok for a few days and want to save a night’s hotel.
Option 4: bus + ferry on one ticket (cheapest)
Two joint tickets are worth considering:
Lomprayah bus + catamaran from Khao San Road
- Buses leave Khao San at 06:00 and 22:00, and connect with Lomprayah’s high-speed catamaran at Chumphon.
- The boat calls at Koh Tao and Koh Phangan first, then lands at Pralarn pier in Maenam, on Samui’s north coast, a short drive from Bang Por Beach.
- Price: about ฿1,250–1,450 standard, ฿1,750 VIP. Time: about 11.5–14 hours.
Government coach + Seatran ferry from the Southern Bus Terminal
- Transport Co coaches leave the Southern Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) in the late afternoon and evening, ride overnight to Donsak and put you on the ferry to Nathon pier.
- Price: about ฿620–960 at the counter (more online). Time: about 12–16 hours.
Tips:
- Buy the bus and ferry as one ticket, so the operator holds you for the next boat if the bus is late.
- Night buses are cold, so bring a sweater, and eat before you board.
- Be careful with cheap agency tickets on Khao San. Buy from the operator or a well-reviewed booking site.
Which pier will you land at, and how far is it from Bang Por?
Koh Samui has one airport and several ferry piers spread around the island. Our school, Health Oasis Resort, is on Bang Por Beach on the quiet north coast, so some arrival points are much closer than others.
| Arrival point | Who lands here | Distance to Health Oasis Resort |
| Koh Samui Airport (USM) | Bangkok Airways direct flights | About 16 km, around 30 minutes. Free pickup for 100 and 200 Hour students |
| Nathon pier | Seatran, Lomprayah and Boonsiri boats from Donsak | About 10 km |
| Pralarn pier, Maenam | Lomprayah’s bus-and-catamaran from Bangkok | A short drive along the north coast |
| Lipa Noi pier | Raja car ferry | About 8 km south of Nathon, so further than Nathon |
| Bangrak pier | Boonsiri’s Bangkok bus-and-boat | Near the airport, on the north-east coast |
Getting from the pier: taxis and shared songthaews (pickup trucks) wait at the piers, and Grab works on Samui, though fares can rise when ferries arrive. Agree the fare before you set off, or message us on WhatsApp and we’ll help you arrange a car.

Joining a yoga course on Koh Samui? Pickup and arrival tips
Your free pickup: airport pickup from Koh Samui Airport (USM) is included with both our 100 Hour and 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Thailand. Send us your flight number and arrival time in advance on WhatsApp, and your driver will meet you in arrivals. Arriving by ferry instead? Message us and we’ll help you arrange the last leg from the pier.
Before you travel:
- Check your visa. Since 15 September 2026, nationals of 60 countries can stay 30 days visa-free, which covers our 23-day course. See our Thailand visa guide.
- Complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within 3 days before you land in Bangkok.
- Your 30 days start in Bangkok, not when you reach Samui.
Travelling in November or December? Koh Samui’s wettest months are usually October to early December, and November is often the wettest of all. The car ferries keep running in most weather, but the fast catamarans can be cancelled in rough seas. Flying direct is the most reliable option then.
More tips:
- Arrive the day before your course starts (our batches start on the 5th of each month), so you can rest after the journey.
- Get Thai baht from an ATM at the airport. Songthaews and small shops take cash.
- Buy a SIM or eSIM in Bangkok so you can message us and use Grab.
