How to Reach Galle from Colombo Airport (CMB): Taxi, Train, Bus and Cost for Yoga Students

How to Reach Galle from Colombo Airport Taxi, Train, Bus Guide (2026-27)

Quick answer: the easiest way to reach Galle from Colombo airport (Bandaranaike International, CMB) is a taxi or pre-booked transfer on the Southern Expressway. It’s about 150 km, usually 2–3 hours, and costs roughly US$60–95, tolls included. The train along the coast is cheaper and very scenic, but you first need to get from the airport into Colombo. Students on our yoga teacher trainings in Galle get free airport pickup.

Galle sits on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, well away from the airport, which is part of why it’s such a calm place to study yoga. This guide compares every way to get there in 2026–27: taxi, app cab, express bus and train, with times, approximate costs and tips for arriving after a long flight.

For most people arriving after a long flight, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is worth it. Fares are approximate one-way prices for 2026–27.

Our honest recommendation: take a taxi or transfer on arrival. Save the train for a day trip from Galle once you’ve settled in, when you can enjoy the coastal views without your luggage.

By taxi or transfer: the fastest and easiest way

The road route runs from the airport onto the expressway network, bypasses central Colombo and continues down the Southern Expressway to the Galle exit. It’s about 150 km. Allow 2–3 hours, depending on traffic around Colombo and the time of day.

Your options:

  • Pre-booked transfer: online transfer sites list a sedan from Colombo airport to Galle from about US$60 one way, including tolls, flight monitoring and waiting time. Your driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign. This is the most stress-free option after a long flight.
  • Airport taxi counter: there are official taxi desks in the arrivals hall with fixed prices. Ask for the expressway route and confirm whether tolls are included.
  • Ride-hailing apps: PickMe and Uber operate in Sri Lanka. You’ll need mobile data, so buy a SIM card first. Check the pickup point, as it may be outside the terminal.

Approximate fares:

VehiclePassengersApprox. one-way fare
Sedan1–3US$60–95
Van / MPV4–6US$80–120

Tips:

  • Agree the price and route before you set off, and ask whether expressway tolls are included.
  • Sharing a car with another student halves the cost.
  • Late-night arrivals: book a transfer in advance rather than relying on finding a car.

By bus: the cheapest way

There’s no direct bus from the airport to Galle. The budget route uses the expressway buses that run from the south and east of Colombo:

  1. Get from the airport to an expressway bus terminal. The main ones are Makumbura (Kottawa, south-east Colombo) and Kadawatha (on the Outer Circular Expressway, closer to the airport). A taxi or tuk-tuk is the easiest way to reach them.
  2. Take an air-conditioned expressway bus to Galle. The EX01 buses from Makumbura run frequently in the daytime, and the expressway part of the journey takes about 1.5 hours.
  3. From Galle bus stand, take a tuk-tuk to your accommodation.

Cost: the expressway bus fare itself is only a few US dollars. Most of the cost is getting from the airport to the terminal, so budget roughly US$10–25 in total. Kadawatha is the closer, cheaper terminal to reach.

Is it worth it? Only if you’re travelling light, on a tight budget and arriving in daytime. Expressway buses mainly run from early morning to evening, and changing buses with a big suitcase after a long-haul flight is tiring.

By train: the scenic way along the coast

The coastal railway from Colombo Fort to Galle is one of Sri Lanka’s best-loved train journeys, running right beside the Indian Ocean for long stretches.

How it works from the airport:

  1. Take a taxi from the airport to Colombo Fort station: about 45–75 minutes depending on traffic.
  2. Take the train to Galle: usually 2–3 hours, with several departures a day, mostly in the morning and afternoon.
  3. From Galle station, it’s about 5–10 km to Green Serene Villa by tuk-tuk or taxi.

Tickets: second class is very cheap, a few US dollars at most. There’s usually only one first-class (air-conditioned) train a day on this line, so book it ahead if you want a guaranteed seat. Third and unreserved second class can be very crowded at rush hour.

Our advice: the train is wonderful, but not with a big suitcase straight off a long-haul flight. Do it as a day trip from Galle, or on your way back to Colombo after the course.

Arrival tips for yoga students

  • Get your ETA before you fly. Every visitor needs a Sri Lanka ETA, and it’s free for 40 nationalities, including the US, UK, India, Australia and most of Europe. See our Sri Lanka ETA guide.
  • Buy a local SIM in the arrivals hall. Mobile operator counters are just after customs. Bring your passport, because a SIM needs ID. You’ll want data for WhatsApp and maps.
  • Get some rupees. There are ATMs and exchange counters in arrivals. Tuk-tuks, small shops and cafés in Galle mostly take cash.
  • Use official transport. Take the airport taxi counter, an app or your pre-booked driver, and ignore drivers approaching you in the terminal.
  • Arriving at night? Many long-haul flights land late. Book a transfer ahead rather than trying buses or trains in the dark.
  • Save your address offline: “Green Serene Villa, Galle“, in case you lose signal on the expressway.
  • Arrive the day before your course if you can, so you start rested.
