They remember how their teacher made them feel, how clearly something was explained, and how their understanding of yoga changed during the training.

When someone joins a teacher training, they are trusting us with much more than their time and money. They are trusting us to guide them through a period of learning, challenge and personal growth.

That is why I do not believe yoga teacher training should be about collecting a certificate or performing the most advanced asana. It should help a student understand the practice, develop awareness, learn how to observe others and gradually find their own authentic voice as a teacher.

For me, teaching yoga has always been about passing on understanding—not simply demonstrating postures. Before you choose a course, there are a few things you should know. You have probably already seen the photographs. A quiet yoga shala.Palm trees. The sound of the ocean.Students practicing together at sunrise. And perhaps a beautiful certificate at the end. It looks like the perfect way to learn yoga. And Goa really can be an extraordinary place to study yoga. But after years of teaching and guiding students through teacher training, we have learned that the photographs only tell a small part of the story. The real experience is deeper. A yoga teacher training in Goa can challenge your body, change the way you understand yoga and make you question things you thought you already knew. It is also one of the biggest investments many students make in their yoga journey. So before you pay a deposit or book your flight to India, here are 7 things we believe every student should know. 1. You Are Not Coming to Goa Just to Do Yoga Poses This is probably the biggest misunderstanding about yoga teacher training. Many students initially think: “I will practice yoga several hours a day, become more flexible and receive my certificate.” The reality is very different. A serious teacher training asks you to understand why you practice, not simply how to perform a posture. Your days may include: You begin by learning yoga for yourself. Gradually, you start learning how to communicate it to another person. That transition—from practitioner to teacher—is where much of the real learning happens. At Diksha Yoga School in Goa, our teaching approach brings together traditional yogic practices with practical teaching skills, so students don’t spend their entire training simply copying postures. Yoga is much bigger than the physical practice. And your teacher training should reflect that. 2. You Do Not Need to Be Flexible Before You Arrive We hear this question constantly: “I’m not flexible. Can I really join a yoga teacher training?” Yes. You do not need to walk into a yoga shala already able to do a perfect split, handstand or advanced backbend. Yoga teacher training is not an audition for the most flexible person in the room. Your starting point is your starting point. Some students arrive with years of practice. Others have practiced only occasionally. What matters is your willingness to learn. During training, you learn how to work with different bodies, limitations and levels of experience. This becomes especially important when you begin teaching other people. In fact, learning to work with your own limitations can make you a more compassionate teacher. You discover that not every student needs to go deeper. Sometimes the most appropriate instruction is: “Stay where you are and breathe.” That is yoga too. 3. The Schedule Is More Intense Than It Looks on Instagram Let’s be honest. A photo of someone practicing yoga beside a palm tree looks peaceful. A full day of teacher training feels very different. A residential Yoga TTC in Goa can involve early mornings, physical practice, lectures, study, meditation, teaching practice and assignments. Your body may become tired. Your mind may become full. And somewhere around the middle of the course, you may think: “I didn’t realize I was going to study this much.” That is completely normal. Teacher training is an immersion. You are not simply attending a 90-minute class and returning to your normal routine. You are temporarily making yoga your daily environment. There will be moments when you feel strong and inspired. There will also be days when you simply want to sleep. Both are part of the experience. The answer isn’t always to push harder. Sometimes the lesson is learning when to rest. 4. The Teacher You Choose May Matter More Than the Destination Goa is beautiful. But beautiful surroundings don’t make someone a good yoga teacher. When researching a yoga teacher training course in Goa, spend at least as much time researching the teacher as you spend looking at the accommodation. Ask: Who will actually teach me? Look at their background. Look at their teaching experience. Look at what they have studied. Look at how long they have been teaching. Look at whether they personally teach the course or simply appear in the school’s marketing. And most importantly: Can they actually teach? At Diksha Yoga School, the teaching is led by Yogini Manisha, founder and lead yoga teacher, whose journey in teaching, training and mentoring students spans more than 16 years. Her approach is rooted in traditional yoga while also focusing on practical teaching skills, individual observation and the ability to understand what each student needs. A Note From Yogini Manisha “After more than 16 years of teaching yoga and mentoring students, one thing I have learned is that students rarely remember the most difficult posture they practiced. I want students to leave their training with stronger foundations, greater confidence and a deeper respect for the tradition they are preparing to share with others.” — Yogini ManishaFounder & Lead Yoga Teacher, Diksha Yoga School This is why the teacher matters. A teacher training should give you more than information. It should give you guidance, honest feedback and a foundation you can continue building on long after you leave Goa. 5. A Certificate Cannot Teach Your First Yoga Class for You This is something we wish every future yoga teacher understood before booking. A certificate is valuable. But a certificate does not automatically make someone a confident teacher. Your first real class will require something different. You will need to stand in front of people and speak clearly. You will need to remember your sequence. You will need to observe students while teaching. You will need to notice when someone is struggling. You will need to modify an instruction. You will need to remain calm when something doesn’t go according to plan. That is why Teaching Methodology matters. A good teacher training should give you opportunities to practice teaching before you graduate. You should learn: How to structure a class Not simply which postures to put together, but why they belong together. How to give useful cues Clear instructions are more valuable than complicated instructions. How to observe students Your job isn’t to make everyone look identical. How to modify practices Different bodies need different approaches. How to develop your teaching presence Your voice, timing, confidence and ability to create a safe environment all matter. This is the difference between knowing yoga and being able to teach yoga. 6. Goa May Become Part of Your Yoga Journey—But Don’t Choose a School Just for the Beach We understand why people choose Goa. The ocean helps. The warm weather helps. The relaxed atmosphere helps. And having time away from your normal environment can make it easier to focus. At Diksha Yoga School, students experience their training in Arambol, North Goa, where the coastal environment creates space to step away from everyday distractions. But here’s our honest advice: Don’t choose a school because it is close to the beach. Choose the school because of the quality of its teaching. The beach will still be there. Your teacher, curriculum and learning environment are what you are actually paying for. A beautiful location should support your training—not replace it. 7. The “Best” Yoga Teacher Training in Goa Is Different for Every Student This may be the most important thing on this list. There is no single course that is perfect for everyone. A student who wants to explore yoga for personal development may want something different from someone who intends to build a career teaching yoga. Before searching for the best yoga teacher training in Goa, first decide what best means for you. Ask yourself: Am I looking for personal transformation? Do I want to become a yoga teacher? Do I want a deeper understanding of traditional yoga? Do I want to improve my existing teaching? Do I need a comprehensive 200-hour foundation? Am I looking for a shorter immersion such as 50 or 100 hours? Your answer should determine your course. Not somebody else’s Instagram recommendation. How to Choose the Right Yoga Teacher Training in Goa With so many yoga schools and teacher-training programs available in Goa, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Course prices can look similar at first. The photographs may all show beautiful yoga halls, tropical gardens and students practicing together. But the things that matter most are often the things you cannot see in a photograph. Before booking your yoga teacher training in Goa, compare the details below. What to compare What you should actually check Teacher experience Who teaches the course? How many years have they been teaching? Do they personally lead the training? Teaching approach Does the school focus only on physical asana, or does it include traditional yoga, philosophy, Pranayama, meditation and practical teaching? Curriculum Look for a balanced program covering asana, Pranayama, meditation, philosophy, anatomy, alignment and teaching methodology. Practical teaching How many opportunities will you have to actually teach, receive feedback and improve your communication? Group size Will you receive individual corrections and personal feedback, or will you be one student among a very large group? Certification What certificate will you receive? If Yoga Alliance registration is important to you, verify the school’s current registration and the credential associated with the course. Accommodation Is accommodation included? Is it private or shared? What facilities and conditions should you expect? Food Are meals included? What type of food is served? Are dietary requirements explained clearly before booking? Location Is the location peaceful and practical for intensive study, while still giving you access to the experience of Goa? Student support Can you ask questions before arrival? Will teachers provide individual guidance during the course? Is there support after graduation? Course schedule How many hours are you actually studying and practicing each day? Is the program genuinely immersive? What is included in the price Compare the complete package rather than the headline price. Check accommodation, meals, training materials, certification and any other inclusions. Real student experiences Look for genuine testimonials, student photographs and reviews that describe the actual learning experience—not just the accommodation. Teacher accessibility Can you communicate directly with the school or teacher before paying your deposit? A good school should be comfortable answering detailed questions. Don’t Choose Your Course Based on Price Alone Price is important, but it should not be the only factor. A lower course fee may initially look attractive until you discover that accommodation, meals, training materials or other essentials are charged separately. Likewise, a higher-priced program is not automatically better. Instead, ask: What am I actually receiving for the total investment? You are investing in much more than a room and a certificate. You are investing in the teacher’s experience, the quality of instruction, the curriculum, practical teaching opportunities, individual feedback and the environment in which you will spend your training. A Simple Question to Ask Before You Book Before making your decision, contact the school and ask: “If I join your teacher training, what will I be able to understand or teach by the time I graduate that I cannot do confidently today?” The answer can tell you a great deal about how a school thinks about teacher education. A school focused primarily on selling a certificate may talk mostly about the certificate. A school focused on education should be able to explain what you will learn, how you will practice it and how you will be supported as you develop. What We Recommend Looking for at Diksha Yoga School At Diksha Yoga School, we believe a teacher-training experience should bring together traditional yoga knowledge, consistent practice and practical teaching skills. That means looking beyond advanced postures. Students should have the opportunity to study areas such as Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga foundations, Pranayama, Meditation, Yoga Philosophy, Anatomy, Alignment, Sequencing and Teaching Methodology. Just as importantly, students should have the opportunity to ask questions, receive feedback and gradually develop their own confidence as teachers. The right yoga teacher training is not necessarily the one with the most impressive photographs or the lowest price. It is the one whose teacher, curriculum, teaching approach and student support match what you genuinely want to learn. What Should You Check Before Booking a Yoga Teacher Training in Goa? Before sending your deposit, ask the school these questions. 1. Who teaches the course? Find out who will actually be in the room with you. 2. How much teaching experience do they have? Look for real teaching history, not just certificates. 3. What is included in the curriculum? A comprehensive program should go beyond asana. 4. How much practical teaching will I do? You need opportunities to teach, receive feedback and improve. 5. What certification will I receive? Understand the certification before booking. 6. How many students are in each group? Smaller groups can allow more individual feedback. 7. What is included in the price? Check accommodation, meals, training materials, excursions, transfers and other inclusions. 8. What happens after graduation? A good school should care about your development, not simply the day you receive your certificate.
